Living the dream with Le Romain
Sunday, 30 October 2016

Successful Sydney owner-breeders Mark & Tony Carusi are living the dream with Le Romain.

The star miler won his second Group 1 in the Cantala Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday with a purse that sent his prizemoney past $1.50 million.  His other big pay-day had been in the G1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) in March.

Le Romain's Group 1 double is also a boon for Greta West Stud's agistment business.  Located in a catchment area renowned for steady rainfall in Victoria's north-east, it's a relaxed environment and horses thrive in the spacious, fertile paddocks.

"Mark & Tony had mares down the road at Springhill Park but moved them here when Tony Hill retired," Greta West studmaster Laurie McCarthy said.  "Le Romain was foaled and raised here.  He went across to Tal Nolen at Benalla to be educated and then came back home before going into training.

"They're good clients and are very loyal.  We've walked Le Romain's dam Mignard on to Darley for the last three years and she foaled a colt by Kuroshio earlier this month."

The Carusi brothers had purchased Mignard (Strategic) for $18,000 at the 2009 Inglis Sydney Spring Sale.  They kept her third foal a son of former Darley shuttler Hard Spun and haven't looked back since sending him to trainer Kris Lees.

"We received a $2.50 million offer from Hong Kong prior to the Cantala Stakes," Mark revealed.  "That's huge money and sometimes it doesn't work out after turning down a big bid.  But it did this time."

Greta West Stud's agistment rates for broodmares, yearlings and weanlings are $16 daily while spellers are $18.  For further details, call Laurie McCarthy (0410 476 196) or John McCarthy (0414 346 749).
