Frozen Rope too fresh at Rosehill
Monday, 21 January 2013

Frozen Rope showed a tremendous amount of promise with a dominant win in the Become A Sponsor Hcp (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Leading jockey Josh Parr has the best winning strike rate of any jockey in Sydney racing and showed why with a text-book winning ride on the lightly-raced gelding who is trained at Gosford by Adam Duggan.

Parr is good mates with Frozen Rope’s owners and he believes there are much better wins ahead.  "I don't like to get too carried away but he felt so much better after his last spell,” Parr said.  “After riding him work one morning, I said to Adam we might have a serious horse now.”

Frozen Rope (5g King Of Prussia Timor Flyer by Azzaam) is owned by group of golfing mates including Grant Binns and his brothers and Liverpool Golf Club pro Brent Dale.

Amid boisterous scenes after the race, Duggan said Frozen Rope needed a lengthy spell last year to recover from a hind-leg issue but the gelding was now racing better than ever.  "During his spell he put on about 60kg," Duggan said.  "He needed time to mature and he is just starting to put it together.”

Duggan said he resisted the temptation to stretch Frozen Rope to a middle distance as the gelding was sprinting so well.  He signalled a career-best preparation before Xmas when bursting through a gap to win over 1350m first-up at Wyong.

"I've kept him fresh and he was just too good for them," he said.  "I will stretch him out to 2000 metres here in a fortnight."

Frozen Rope improved his record to 7 wins and 5 placings from just 15 starts with another demonstration of his newly found versatility.  In previous campaigns, Frozen Rope had been regarded as a one-dimensional, front-running stayer best suited on wet tracks.

"When he was last in work, we had him down as a wet-tracker and stayer, he wore pacifiers and blinkers and used to go hard in his work and races," Parr said.  "I'm starting to think it might have had something to do with his hind-leg problem.  Adam gave the horse a long spell and he has done a great job getting him back to top form.

"He’s just so much more relaxed in his work.  He put on a ridiculous amount of weight and in his first trial back he barely fitted into the barriers - he's just a mountain of a horse.  You can put him anywhere in a race and he has a good turn of foot."

His sire King Of Prussia (Anabaa) stands Greta West Stud for a $2,750 (inc gst) service fee.  He is the only foal to race from 2000m winner Timor Flyer who is by Sydney Cup winner Azzaam.
