Le Romain likely for Everest
Monday, 20 August 2018

There’s an old saying that weight will stop a train and Le Romain did, briefly, look like he might run out of steam in Saturday’s G3 Show County Quality (1200m) at Randwick.

And who could have blamed him: A triple Group 1 winner, he was lugging 61kg, while the slightly more fancied Siege of Quebec was 8kg shy.  However, after hitting the lead 200m from home, Le Romain wasn’t prepared to give his rival an inch, eventually running out a length and a half winner.

Foaled and raised at Greta West Stud, Le Romain has now won more than $2.79 million and could land one of the three remaining slots for the $13 million Everest at Randwick on October 13.

"He's played at the highest level for a long while and it's good to see him get that win," trainer Kris Lees said.  "If The Everest happens it happens but there are races including the (G1) Epsom Hcp."

Mark Carusi bred and part-owns Le Romain with his brother Anthony.  “He’s a fantastic horse, tough as they come,” he told Aushorse.  “And I reckon he’s got another couple of Group 1 wins in him at the very least.”

Concreters by trade and based at Camden in NSW, the brothers keep their mares at Laurie & John McCarthy’s Greta West Stud in Victoria which is where Le Romain’s dam, Mignard, normally resides.

Purchased for $18,000 at the 2009 Inglis Spring Sale, Mignard - a winning Strategic mare from the family of top 2yo Black Shoes - was sent to former Darley stallion Hard Spun in the spring of 2011.  The resultant foal…Le Romain.

Le Romain’s 3yo half-sister Mikuro (by Kuroshio) was passed in for $140,000 on the Gold Coast last year and has since placed in two of her three runs.  Her full sister to Mbappe is now a 2yo and has been retained as will the Exosphere filly foaled last year.

Mignard is in foal to Frosted and will be heading off to Astern this spring.

Greta West Stud stands Master Of Design and King Of Prussia and offers quality agistment in a catchment area renowned for steady rainfall in north-east Victoria.  Daily rates start at $16 for broodmares (short and long term), yearlings, weanlings & spellers and also provide walk-in, foaling down and weanling services at very competitive rates.
